BAD POP (BC)

BAD POP (BC)

BAD POP have grown up, and they’re kind of pissed off about it. So, this indie rock band turned to every teenager’s refuge: distortion pedals and sarcasm.

The targets are wide for Canadian band BAD POP’s furious but refreshing upcoming release, a deluge of raw punk rock energy, warm analog psychedelia, and cheeky nihilistic musings on music festivals, fast food and the loneliness of adulthood.

The live show is two-hundred percent fun and fury. Previous incarnation of the band, Hot Panda, drove five tour vans into the ground with over a dozen tours and festival runs of North America and Europe (SXSW, Primavera, CMJ and Reeperbahn).

Live, frontman Chris Connelly is alternatively heartwarming and menacing, like a pissed-off Weird Al. Superstar multi-instrumentalist Catherine Hiltz weaves melodic bass lines like a punk-rock bar-brawling PJ Harvey. Drummer Aaron Klassen was raised on a steady diet of Bonham and Grohl, and plays as if the snare just said something about his mother. In the band’s own words ‘we are serious about not taking ourselves too seriously.

CLOSE TALKER (SK)

CLOSE TALKER (SK)

Close Talker is an exciting indie rock trio from the prairies of Canada who are turning heads and gaining global attention. Their new record ‘Lens’ will be released April 21st and showcases maturity and poise while still maintaining the raw energy and vulnerability of the band’s acclaimed live show. Loaded with heavy drums, thick keys, and always-special guitars, rivalled only by sincere vocals, the band has now entered a state that forges an earnest expression from every vantage point.

DUOTANG (MB)

DUOTANG (MB)

Formed in the summer of 1995, the two-piece band's mix of mod-rock and post-punk garnered critical attention and signed to famed Vancouver independent record label Mint Records. Over the next five years, Duotang released three albums that topped the college radio charts in Canada and helped get the band on the road touring extensively across Canada, United States, and Europe, including a cross-country tour with The English Beat. The duo decided to take a hiatus in 2002… one that wound up lasting 12 years. In December 2014, at the request of Mint Records, Duotang reunited for a show in Vancouver, and followed it up with a sold-out hometown show in Winnipeg. With a renewed vigor, and crop of new songs, the duo went on to play the Winnipeg Jazz Festival, Calgary’s Sled Island, and Edmonton's UP&DT Festival. And now, 15 years after their last release comes Duotang's newest album New Occupation, releasing this fall on Montreal's Stomp records. Yes, it appears Duotang is not only back, but better than ever.
"Allum and Slaughter have loaded up their angular mod-pop with a bigger punch and more urgency than their previous releases. There's some deeply acerbic bite, in the deceivingly buoyant "Karma Needs to Come Around" and the horn-led title track that was usually sporadic in the past; this time, there's a consistent sprinkling of it." 8 out of 10 – Exclaim! LIVING HOUR (MB)

LIVING HOUR (MB)

Living Hour began in the basements of south Winnipeg, writing dreamy love songs inspired by the cinematic sky of its hometown. Blending bright shimmering guitar pop with thick Casio drones and uniquely powerful, smoky vocals, the band’s sound washes over you like the soundtrack to the best parking lot makeout session of your youth. Watery echoes of gorgeously sung melodies, psychedelic interlocking guitar, and huge driving crescendos create an enchanting wall of blissful dream pop.

Living Hour contributed two songs to Family Portrait II, a vinyl compilation put out by Art is Hard Records (Bristol/London) in April 2015, and released a super limited edition cassette of its debut self-titled album with Tree Machine Records (Bloomington) that same month. The band released its debut album worldwide with Lefse Records (Portland) on February 2016.

“Winnipeg rockers Living Hour dream big with grandiose, all-encompassing shoegaze that stretches to the ends of the earth...With gauzy guitar hooks and wide-open, drifting vocals, Living Hour wear their heart on their sleeve, and ‘Seagull’ will no doubt pull on heartstrings. It is equal parts scuzzy noise and charming dream-pop.” – Stereogum

“South Winnipeg must be for lovers because the Canadian quintet Living Hour is making some of the most heartsick synth-pop since Cocteau Twins. We're talking sweeping Casios, massive hooks, and lovey-dovey feelings big enough to float on.” – Noisey

PORT JUVEE (AB)

PORT JUVEE (AB)

“A tireless vibe that does not let down.” - Culture Collide

Although PORT JUVEE embody a sound that is equally indebted to New York City post-punk and California surf garage, the Canadian prairies is where the band calls home. The 5-piece’s latest release, CRIMEWAVE is a collection of 7-songs, produced by the band with help from Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend “Contra”).

Between the ramshackle post-punk urgency of "Double Vision," the lackadaisical punk of "Bleached Out Soda Pop," "Trapped Under Water’s" pounding garage rhythms and the 80’s-inspired escapism of the title track, PORT JUVEE’s CRIMEWAVE offers the band’s most dizzying assortment yet.

PORT JUVEE has supported DIIV, Titus Andronicus, Twin Peaks, Sticky Fingers, Bleachers and The Orwells, and played a multitude of festivals including CMJ, Sled Island, X-Fest and Rifflandia.

Like a raging bull, the bearded quintet from Edmonton, Royal Tusk are bucking full of throttle out of the gate, unrelenting in their delivery of gritty rock 'n' roll”. - Buzzfeed
Forged from rock ‘n’ roll soul, blue-collar charm and a renegade attitude, it’s no surprise this quintet of bearded prairie men made a lasting impression with audiences on their well-received 2014 EP, Mountain
Royal Tusk‘s full-length debut, DealBreaker embraces a dynamic evolution in the band’s sound. Produced by the award-winning Eric Ratz (Big Wreck, Monster Truck, Arkells, Billy Talent), DealBreaker captures the true raw energy Royal Tusk wield, and the result is loud and guitar-driven with hints of Americana and soul.

SLOW LEAVES (MB)

SLOW LEAVES (MB)

Slow Leaves is Winnipeg’s Grant Davidson. With sincere and poetic lyrics, lilting melodies, incisive observations, and a voice that’s warm and effortless, Slow Leaves calls to mind an old country-folk record newly discovered in your parent's attic. Despite self-describing as a forger of wisdom, Slow Leaves remains decidedly a songwriter rich in heart and Canadian humility. Davidson began making records under his own name in 2006 and in 2014, now as Slow Leaves, released the critically acclaimed full-length Beauty is so Common which reached #1 on the Canadian !earshot National Folk/Roots/Blues chart and was a CBC radio 2 favourite where his song “Life of a Better Man” charted. Slow Leaves garnered further attention in 2015 for his selection in the Allan Slaight JUNO Master Class. Slow Leaves is currently working on a new record for release in fall of 2016, continuing to spare nothing in creating vivid images and heartfelt connections: the culmination of where he’s been and where he’s going.

YES WE MYSTIC (MB

YES WE MYSTIC (MB

Delivering at times like a dive into a dark, warm ocean, and at others like a blast of icy water on bare skin, Yes We Mystic is a dynamic and emotional musical powerhouse originating out of Winnipeg, Canada. Approaching genre as a tool rather than a barrier, the band takes instruments, ideas, and sounds from wherever they can to craft something that is all at once exhilarating, heartrending, pummelling, and grand. Hurling rock together with folk, R&B, and pop, strings and mandolins together with synthesizers, pedals, samples, and vocal effects, they come up with songs that can mellow and groove but climb in an instant to towering, frenzied heights. Throwing opposites together has been a practice that they keep coming back to. The result is both unconventional and weirdly relatable.
