Arcana Kings (SK)
Arcana Kings (SK)

The Arcana Kings (AK) have just released their second album entitled 'Lions As Ravens' on 10/19/19. Guaranteed to make you move, AK are a fantastic blend of upbeat, anthem rock. Forming in 2015, AK developed a strong following around the world with hard rock listeners. AK's not so secret weapon, the bagpipes, sets the band apart and uses the pipes as an extension of the sound without making it the focus. Think Foo Fighters + AC/DC + Metis spirit + all the fun of an east coast kitchen party!

The Saskatchewan Roughriders use the bands single, 'Here We Go' as the teams take the field charge song and is quickly becoming a sports anthem with CFL, NHL, and other pro teams like the Winnipeg jets, Sacramento Kings, Sask Roughriders, Las Vegas Golden Knights, and the Saskatoon Rush all officially using the song to pump up the crowd. Constantly performing in Canada and USA, the band has begun to take the show to Asia and Europe. AK will celebrate their 100th show in Las Vegas in September 2021.

Cell7 (Iceland)
Cell7 (Iceland)

The Icelandic hip hop scene may still be young and small but Cell7—a pioneer of the genre & a rare female presence in a male dominated world—is not just one of its steady fixtures but also one of its brightest stars. As a veteran of the Icelandic rap scene, Cell7 is cited as an inspiration for established artists & women just breaking into the genre. Cell7 returned last year with her sophomore solo album, “Is anybody listening?” & proves yet again that she is one of the most original voices out there. The album was nominated for the Nordic Music Prize 2020 and won the Iceland Music Awards 2020 for the best hip hop album. Cell7´s show is not to be missed. Her show from the last year‘s Iceland Airwaves was regarded by many as one of the highlights.

Field Guide (MB)
Field Guide (MB)

Winnipeg is an interesting place. It’s cold, it’s cheap, and it’s responsible for more than its fair share of great bands and fine musicians. It’s a special thing when such a small, isolated place is chock-full of phenomenal, genre spanning music. The next generation is blissfully spared the ill-advised constructs that a normal music scene can beat into you.

Such is the case for Field Guide who spent his youth on the road with his high school best friends playing to no one and getting good at music. He paid his bills by being a guitar player for hire all the while learning how to craft songs that land just like journal entries. In essence, because they are.

Field Guide found an audience with his EP You Were, which was a breakthrough success on both streaming and radio. After abruptly moving to a new city right before a global pandemic, Field Guide holed up in his Toronto apartment and did nothing but play guitar and write songs for months. In June 2020 he packed up a rental van and drove back to the prairies to record 15 songs with his best friends. Those songs are being released in 2021.

JayWood (MB)
JayWood (MB)

JayWood is the pseudonymous indie alternative project of Jeremy Haywood-Smith from Winnipeg Manitoba. What started as a bedroom recording project of sad jangle-pop songs, evolved into the psych-funk approach present on JayWood’s latest effort, Some Days - his debut release on Captured Tracks.
Written and originally recorded in 2015, the EP Some Days was born of a time of compounding transitions in Haywood-Smith’s life.

The end of a long-term relationship, a shift in social circles, and an impending move found Haywood-Smith grappling with self identity. It also presented the rare moment of a fresh start. Taking cues from his favourite DIY artists, he channeled his anxieties into songwriting, trying his hand at self-recording using just a guitar, a midi-controller, and a borrowed MacBook. “I had to write the EP and learn how to record at the same time, which you can definitely hear in the original recordings. The songs were kinda messy, but I just went with the first ideas that came to mind. I made a rule for myself not to go back on anything, because I didn't have the time to tweak around.”

Major Funk (YK)
Major Funk (YK)

A unique brand of Yukon Funk.

2021 Western Canadian Music Award Nominee

High energy bass-led grooves, soaring vocals, and a tight horn section; this isn’t what you’d expect from a band coming from the Yukon in Canada’s North, but it’s exactly what you get with Whitehorse’s Major Funk. It’s also a great formula to get a crowd moving, and they’ve got this down to a science. Several years of research and development in the studio and on the road has refined the band’s sound into something familiar but fresh, epic but accessible, and dangerously infectious. Most importantly, however, it’s a ton of fun, and it makes you want to dance. It’s all on display on their debut full length effort, “Is That You?” (2021): a groove-heavy genuinely good time that will stay with you long after the last note.

Marie-Clo x éemi
Marie-Clo x éemi

éemi is a bilingual singer-songwriter from Saskatchewan. The Fransaskoise musician sets herself apart with her rich voice and minimalist lyricism, which are poetic and dark with a playful side; this allows her to test the boundaries of dark humour.

Her first EP "Honey", released in April 2020 and produced by Mario Lepage (Ponteix), was nominated at the Saskatchewan Music Awards, the WCMAs, and the Trille Or awards. She is also representing Saskatchewan at the prestigious Festival international de la chanson de Granby in August 2021. Her EP also caught the attention of StudioFest, a nationally broadcasted music festival (ICI Musique).

This is not the first time éemi sets herself apart; in 2017, she was a finalist for “Planète BRBR” with Marie-Clo and developed a close friendship with her. Marie-Clo also released her feminist conceptual LP Shell(e) during the pandemic, which has gained a lot of momentum.

In June 2020 both artists worked on a song for Centre NOVAS. This propelled them to want to collaborate together on their next album, while also building on the momentum gained from their solo careers.

Their francophone, eco-feminist, electro-pop album is currently being produced by Mario Lepage and will be released in early 2022.

Marlaena Moore (AB)
Marlaena Moore (AB)

Marlaena Moore is an enigmatic performer with an incredible presence and soaring voice. Her songs cross personal bedroom confessionals with grunge influenced guitar tones in a tight pop-song package.

Marlaena released her first album ‘Beginner’ in early 2014 and it hit number 1 on the CJSR charts and was in their top 10 most played albums that year. She has supported accomplished acts such as Angel Olsen, Chad VanGaalen, Jennifer Castle, US Girls and Julie and The Wrong Guys. Her second full-length album, ‘Gaze’ was recorded by producer Renny Wilson (Faith Healer, Michael Rault) and was released on vinyl through Kingfisher Bluez Records.

On her third record, ‘Pay Attention! Be Amazed!’, released in spring 2020, the 26 year-old musician shifts her perspective in different ways. With the help of Chris Dadge and Chad VanGaalen on production and a crew of musical artists Moore calls “unbelievable human beings with ungodly talent,” Moore’s newest full-length record strengthens the sound she has been building for years, while simultaneously gesturing at where her work can grow.

Meltt (BC)
Meltt (BC)

Meltt is a collection of four multi-instrumentalists sonically painting their own
dreamscapes by combining psychedelic-guitars, swelling-synthesizers, powerful drums, and ethereal vocals. Currently falling somewhere in the category of alternative-rock/psych, the band has been praised for their combination of heavy riffs, colourful instrumentation, detail-oriented production, and under it all, multi-layered song-writing. With an equal love for the blissfully tripped out and the powerfully crunchy corners of music, a Meltt album or show is designed to transport the listener to spaces they have only previously dreamt of: reverb-laden forests at the bottom of the ocean, melodic tide pools begging to be jumped into and impossibly lush and colourful caverns that seem to go on forever. Last year Meltt released their debut full-length album Swim Slowly, a highly diverse twelve track reflection on love, mortality, time, personal growth and the hazy line between the spiritual and material worlds. They invite you to leave the shore of your day to day life, take a deep breath, and dive into the soundscapes of their imagination.
