Hughes

Hughes is a folk-influenced alt band from Yellowknife, Canada, crafting music that blends alt-country warmth with the spaciousness of northern life. Their sound is rooted in honesty, atmosphere, and the quiet emotional intensity of lived experience. Drawing on the stark beauty and solitude of the subarctic, Hughes creates songs that feel both intimate and expansive — like a long drive under wide skies or a quiet conversation by the lake.
Formed as a solo project by musician Benji Straker, Hughes has morphed in to group of collaborators and friends – the band’s strength lies in their chemistry and restraint — thoughtful lyrics paired with subtle, layered instrumentation. There’s a stillness in their sound, a sense of things left unsaid, that invites listeners in without demanding too much.
In July 2025, Hughes released their self-titled debut full-length album, a collection of songs that reflect their evolving voice and vision. From hushed acoustic moments to slow-burning crescendos, the record captures the emotional range and grounded storytelling at the core of
their music. Whether performing in a quiet hall or on an outdoor stage, Hughes delivers their songs with sincerity and intention — a band shaped by place, practice, and a deep respect for the craft of songwriting.
