Featured Artist - Ellen Froese
Ellen Froese is what you'd call a “prolific artist”; committed, too. For someone who only just passed the threshold of their mid-20s, she's amassed a resolutely solid body of work and, with a variety of projects, achieved more than some many years her senior. Follow Ellen Froese on Instagram.
For Each Flower Growing, Froese's fourth full-length, produced in collaboration with the Sheepdogs' Sam Corbett, is her most accomplished statement to date, drawing on her established sound as a folk & country-based singer/songwriter while incorporating a wider frame of reference in the rich production, supple instrumentation, and overall sonic soundworld. It's much harder to pin down than any simple description can convey, making it all the more worthwhile to check out.
1. What is the coolest show you have ever played?
One of the coolest live shows I've played was in the Canmore Caves - we had to hike up a mountain to then spelunk down into an underground cavern where we played acoustically for the folks who had bought tickets.
2. How do you keep yourself healthy and happy working in music?
I don't always, haha. I struggle with depressrion and anxiety but trying to keep a routine on the road helps. Making sure I schedule time off is very important too! Spending non-music related time with pals and taking myself out to movies and events is good for me!
3. What is the biggest challenge you've experienced in getting to where you are?
Managing my mental health has always been a challenge for me. It can be hard managing certain social expectations when I'm not feeling particularily social, and sometimes the long days on the road can be quite tiring.
4. What is the best part of your life that isn't music related?
My cat, my pals, watching TV, and embroidery!
5. What is the best advice you have been given in the music business?
Don't make art for anybody other than yourself! If you like what you are doing and are happy doing it, that's all that matters. Worrying about what other people think will only stress you out.
