Featured Artist - Skinny Dyck

Resist the urge to laugh at Skinny Dyck - the playful alias of western Canadian artist Ryan Dyck (or don’t, that’s kind of the idea). If you elect to chew down on the name, it’s likely that a familiar flavour profile comes about - to be expected given the traditional country associations. What began as a side project to his steel guitar pursuits emerged as a principal form of expression, beginning with 2020’s Get to Know Lonesome LP. Follow Skinny Dyck on Instagram.

But inherent in the songwriting and production choices has always been a thread of something different. “It reeks of creativity and originality not found in average country songs” (Americana Highways) and sets Skinny apart from the crowd. Marinating in the success of his off-brand twang is a new batch of material that sees the songwriter stepping away from a genre defined by its traditions. Following successful Canadian and European tours in 2023, with showcases at Reeperbahn and Come Together, Skinny sets his sights on a new album in 2024. The first single “Colour of Your Eyes” is to be released by Victory Pool on Feb 15. Mixed by Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Bonnie Billy) it seems representative of a welcome retreat into new, deeper waters

1. What is the coolest show you have ever played?

Oh my I don't know about best but here's one! Honky Tonk Harbour in Hamburg last Spring was really cool and a great atmosphere in an amazing venue - Nochtwache - after an insane day of cancelled flights and lost luggage. We went to Komet afterward. Smoky little St. Pauli dive bar that I really love.

2. How do you keep yourself healthy and happy working in music?

Listening to new music baby. Collaborating with new people - whether musicians, artists, or whatever is helpful for inspiration. Having one good sandwich a day - life is beautiful.

3. What is the biggest challenge you've experienced in getting to where you are?

Learning to be patient. Results come slow and efforts to slip ahead usually fall flat and come at the cost of sacrificing the artistic vision. I want stuff to happen all the time. But I've learned that most times I need to sit back, chill, and enjoy the sandwich that's in front of me.

4. What is the best part of your life that isn't music related?

Right now I'm really enjoying the AFCON tournament (African football). I like sports. But obviously it's not just the ball going in the net - I think I like it because I like drama. Who doesn't! Haha that and spending time with my family.

5. What is the best advice you have been given in the music business?

"all you have to do is play perfectly in tune and perfectly in time"
